#poetry #music - "big business monkey" daniel johnston

"big business monkey"
daniel johnston

nothing's funny
big business monkey
everything's money
you sell cheeseburgers
with that cashier's smile
he runs his house like
a burger king manager
and the only jokes he knows
are the ones that'll put you down

big business monkey
he'll take over the world
and you can have it now
but you can't take it with you
and everything you cling to
will rot
and everything you do
will be forgot
by everyone you ever tried to impress

album: Hi How Are You (1983)

fear not a basement movement or that you'll be discovered. keep the faith and the faithful will find you.

Generatta

I sit here, where Eliot could not,
Twenty floors above the street.
People below are color spots—
Trowsers, rolled? Flat-front or pleat?
Of their flesh is a matter of guess.
That they are human, a matter of faith.
What are they—  What? Tsk tsk, sot—
I simply take note of their game,
Watching as the hawk eyes prey from afar
Through great lanes of land and air,
But I do not swoop, I lick my feathers clean
Of the knowledge my hawk eyes glean,
Here are not matters of pride or shame,
Here is only a question of how to compare
One spot to another, high above it all—
I do not swoop because swooping involves me,
And well, you see,
The twenty floors between,
Naturally, disinterest me.

Story of an Artist by Daniel Johnston

Listen up and I'll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren't so bold

Everyone, and friends and family
Saying, "Hey! Get a job!"
"Why do you only do that only?
Why are you so odd?

We don't really like what you do.
We don't think anyone ever will.
It's a problem that you have,
And this problem's made you ill."

Listen up and I'll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren't so bold

The artist walks alone
Someone says behind his back,
"He's got his gall to call himself that!

He doesn't even know where he's at!"

The artist walks among the flowers
Appreciating the sun
He does this all his waking hours
But is it really so wrong?

They sit in front of their TV
Saying, "Hey! This is fun!"
And they laugh at the artist
Saying, "He doesn't know how to have fun."

The best things in life are truly free
Singing birds and laughing bees
"You've got me wrong", says he.
"The sun don't shine in your TV"

Listen up and I'll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren't so bold

Everyone, and friends and family
Saying, "Hey! Get a job!"
"Why do you only do that only?
Why are you so odd?

We don't really like what you do.
We don't think anyone ever will.
It's a problem that you have,
And this problem's made you ill."

Listen up and I'll tell a story
About an artist growing old.
Some would try for fame and glory
Others just like to watch the world.

Rock and Roll/EGA by Daniel Johnston

There was a day when I was so lonely
Time passed me by
I was more dead than alive
Every minute was like an hour
Every day was an eternity
I looked for hope but all around me
People didn’t seem to care

But oh that rock’n’roll it saved my soul
That rock’n’roll

If I ever thought that I could be happy
Dreams like that always faded away
And all the girls already had boyfriends
I was alone as lonely could be
I laid asleep and turned on the radio
The music to me was like a dream

But oh that rock’n’roll it saved my soul
That rock’n’roll

You walk around but you gotta have a reason
Something worth getting up in the morning for
My heart looked to art and I found the beatles
Oh god I was and am a true disciple
Look for the fun you’ll start a happy cycle
The music will make you come alive

But oh that rock’n’roll it saved my soul
That rock’n’roll

She was crying just like a baby
Didn’t wanna fight or more like maybe
You ought to get on home at night
Keep the battle to the right
Seeing the love and adultery
And wonderin’ who was in the outfield
Swear I know the truth
And I ain’t wearin’ nobody’s shoes
I got some dollar on high look out
It’s shinning, with a bottle of knuckleheads
She’s like a drunken rat cat, oh
I guess you’re coming out the backdoor
She did alright it’s all battle or fight
So I feel all empty now
You try to hold a figure eight
She said what’s the Antichrist
He said oh what did you do to her
It’s probably she’s been talking to Lucifer
Is that really the night
Oh, my, uh, uh
alright
hey
More God Bolts
